St. Kitts and Nevis red cross society receives donation from CIBC First Caribbean Christmas campaign

Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 19th, 2012  --  The efforts of the St Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society have resulted in an important and timely financial donation from CIBC FirstCaribbean.

During the Christmas season, CIBC FirstCaribbean committed to donating a percentage of all credit card receipts gathered during the months of November and December to St Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society.

Mrs Julie Gumbs, Manager, Retail Banking and Operations, explained that the St Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society held special meaning to the organization.

She stated that CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank continues to fulfill its role as a responsible corporate partner in St Kitts and Nevis by giving back to the community in signature projects such as the Adopt A Cause and Unsung Hero programs. She also thanked the bank’s clients who would have conducted business using their cards to make the donation possible.

Upon receiving the cheque, at the Red Cross Headquarters on Horsford’s Road, Mr Winston Tyrell, President, lauded the bank for making such a commitment despite the challenging economic environment.

According to Mr Tyrell, the main goal of the St Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society was to help humanity. The work of the Red Cross was focused on disaster response and recovery; development in the areas of health and humanitarian matters; and promoting social inclusion and peace.

In its ongoing Christmas campaign, the Bank made a pledge to distribute a percentage of net retail sales made on its suite of Visa Classic and Visa Gold credit card products, to charities in each of 15 territories across the Caribbean.

In the Federation, the St Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society was adopted as the special charity. Mr Tyrell indicated that the Society’s plan of action was to tackle the major humanitarian and development challenges of the present decade and as such they always welcomed donations from the community; but CIBC FirstCaribbean’s pledge is extra special.

He stated that the funds would go towards the Disaster Management Fund and towards assisting disaster victims. The funds would also be used for the day to day operations of the St Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society. Mr Tyrell thanked the Bank for its thoughtfulness.

The funds will be used for community projects especially in training members of the community to be first responders in major disasters.
