ST.JOHN'S Antigua, March 20th, 2012  --  Prime Minister, The Hon. Dr. Winston Baldwin Spencer welcomed and held cordial talks with the Hon. Enver Hoxhaj, Minister with responsibilities for Foreign Affairs in the Republic of Kosovo on matters relating to the recognition of Kosovo as an independent state.

The Kosovo Foreign Minister stated that he is seeking the support of Antigua and Barbuda to recognize his country as an independent state that is functional, prosperous, stable and multi-ethnic with a diverse society and steadily growing economy.

In response Prime Minister Spencer indicated that though he is sympathetic with the desire of the people of Kosovo to seek their independence, Antigua and Barbuda will continue to support the United Nations process geared towards ensuring that Kosovo meet all the necessary criteria according to the Montevideo Convention of 1933 on the rights of states.

The Prime Minister further stated that this process should be allowed to take its course and allow for a full report on the work of the United Nations Interim International Administration of Kosovo (UNMIK), established in 1999, to be fully analyzed  by  the UN Security Council.

The matter of Kosovo also continues to be a point of discussion among the Council for Community and Foreign Relations (COFCOR) of CARICOM.
