Demolition of Molasses Tanks Signal New Economic Day

~~Adz:Left~~Basseterre, St. Kitts: The area of the coastline immediately South of the factory pier at Bird Rock is about to undergo major change as activities surrounding a Fuel Tank Farm Project unfold.

Oaklyn Peets, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Utilities, Transport and Posts, told SKNIS that engineers and construction workers are finalizing details for the demolition of the existing molasses tanks in preparation for the U.S. $25 million project.

According to Mr. Peets, very shortly heavy equipment will be onsite and activities there will increase dramatically. Although the area is outside the major road network in St. Kitts, Peets called on motorists to be vigilant and to drive with an awareness that heavy duty vehicles will be moving to and fro occasionally.

The Fuel Tank Farm will be a storage area for petrol from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela which will initially supply the needs to the local power station.

A ministry spokesperson said the demolition of the molasses tanks would signal yet again the diversification of the national economy.

Given the rising cost of petrol, the Ministry of Works, Utilities, Transport and posts is anticipating the rapid completion of this project and has assured of its intention to seek other avenues of economizing on energy production and supply.
