Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  March 22nd, 2012   – Persons wishing to promote businesses or events through advertising signs, banners and billboards are reminded to first seek permission from the Planning Authority and adhere to guidelines for the proper mounting and removal of signage.

Speaking to the Department of Information and Public Relations, Chief Planner of the Town and Country Planning Department Mrs. Marva Titley-Smith said, “Before mounting a banner, event planners must first seek permission from the Planning Authority through the Town and Country Planning Department.

It is a simple process once persons adhere to the guidelines.”Banners should be kept in a clean and tidy condition and should not interfere with the use of any right-of-way and should not impair visibility of the travelling public. They must be removed immediately after the event. Also, any structure which may be used for the purpose of mounting the banners should be maintained in a safe condition.

Persons are encouraged to apply at the department two weeks prior to the event by filling out an application, describing the details and location of the banner or sign, and paying the requisite fee.

The Chief Planner noted, “It is important that persons with approved banners are given the opportunity to promote their events through this medium. However, since banners and signs deteriorate over time, if they are not removed in a timely manner, this can lead to untidy and unsightly displays and can affect the safety of pedestrians and the motoring public.”

The Premier’s Office is reminding the public that, in accordance with Section 20 (1) of the Physical Planning Act of 2004, the erection and display of any advertisement, including posters, signs or banners is deemed as development, thus the need for planning approval. For more information please telephone the Town and Country Planning Department at 468-3701 extension 2158.
