What does Father’s Day mean to you?

    By Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -  GOD took the strength of a mountain, the majesty of a tree,
the warmth of a summer sun, the calm of a quiet sea,
the generous soul of nature, the comforting arm of night,
the wisdom of the ages, the power of the eagle’s flight,
the joy of a morning in spring, the faith of a mustard seed,
the patience of eternity, the depth of a family need,
then He combined these qualities, and when there was nothing more to add
He knew His masterpiece was complete.
    And so, He called it...Father!

Fathers are just as special as mothers, and today, Sunday, June 15, which is celebrated in some countries as Father’s Day, is to honour and celebrate fatherhood and male parenting. History states that a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Her father had raised her after her mother died and she wanted him to know how special he was to her. Her father was born in June, so she chose that month to celebrate her father, hence Father’s Day.

SKNVibes went out on the streets of Basseterre and asked several persons what Father’s Day means to them and here are what some had to say.

Lindesa Liburd: “Father’s day means a lot to me because I love my dad and he gives me everything I want if necessary. “

    Shamari Lewis:
“It means a lot, and this day is when you recognise how much your father really means to you.”

    Ervine Browne:
“Father’s Day is a celebration to all fathers and I am proud to be a father. It feels great being a father, especially knowing my son looks like me.”

    Joy Ward
: “Father’s Day is always a sad day for me, because my dad died when I was 16. So Father’s Day always reminds me of what I don’t have.”

    Officer Moccou:
“Father’s Day is a normal day; Mother’s Day is more important because fathers cause it to be that way. We need to play a better role as fathers instead of leaving the mothers in turmoil.”

There you have it. So this Father’s Day show your father some extra love and respect and be thankful that there is a man in your life you can
call “daddy”, for many cannot do the same. Hats off to all the responsible fathers out there who are living up to their responsibility.

SKNVibes also would also like to wish all the fathers a “Happy Father’s Day”!
