Press Release (SKNIS)

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 26th, 2012 (SKNIS): Members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force gave an impressive display in Nevis on Sunday when they performed the Beating Retreat ceremony.

Deputy Governor General His Honour Eustace John took the salute while dignitaries including Premier the Honourable Joseph Parry and persons from communities across Nevis looked on and applauded the troops on parade.

Donette Dyer told the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service (SKNIS) that she enjoyed the ceremony and was delighted to bring her three-year-old son to see the men and women of the security forces execute the precision drills of the parade – which is staged by military units throughout the Commonwealth.

Beating Retreat is a military ceremony dating back to 16th century England when the drum was used to communicate with military units. It was first used in order to recall nearby patrolling units to their castle.

The event in Nevis was held as part of ongoing celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Activities continue this Thursday and Friday with dramatization of significant historical events.

On March 29 at 9:00 a.m. there will be a re-enactment of the Wedding of Horatio Nelson and Frances (Fanny) Nesbit at Montpelier Plantation Inn in Nevis.

That same day at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. the first of two-days of re-enactment of the Great Siege of 1782 will take place at the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. A repeat performance will be held on March 30.
