Monroe College Jump Start

Press Release

CASTRIES St. Lucia,  March 22nd 2012   –   In a praiseworthy gesture, Monroe College has given back to the Saint Lucian community with an investment in the education of Secondary School students.

Monroe College recently held a completion ceremony for its “Jump Start Iniative” - a program where one hundred and fifty secondary school students undertook a university level course at the expense of the college.

The institution’s President, Stephen Jerome praised the participants for their motivation and commitment to bolster their education. “The reality of life is that there are a lot of people who start things, and there's a smaller number who finish.

And the thing you have to congratulate yourself about is that this was not the only thing you were doing. You had a full high school schedule, and this was an extra challenge for you. And the thing about life is that it is those extra things that you have to put yourself into that really make all the difference.

Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Anthony Felicien, addressed the gathering, sharing his appreciation of the initiative put forward by Monroe College.“This is an innovation in the education system in Saint Lucia. You have planned, you have implemented, you are seeing results.

The important thing- as we need in education circles- is for the programme to be sustained. We do not want something to start and then to end. This is a moment for celebration not only for the students and the parents, but for the faculty and administration of Monroe College. Faculty, Monroe College- well done!,” said Dr. Felicien.

Dr. Felicien also reminded students of the importance of pursuing higher education, remarking that secondary level education alone is inadequate for the demands of the 21st century.

He encouraged the students to continue on the path they have started, holding on to the motivation to achieve and the momentum gained with the “Jump Start Programme.”
