Press Release

St. George’s  Grenada, March 28th, 2012 – Members of Her Majesty’s Opposition are expressing great concern over the worsening conditions of the nation’s road network and points out that after the painstaking, determined and costly upgrading of all classes of roads in the nation, they are now being left to deteriorate to such an extent that it will cost taxpayers millions of dollars to bring them back to the state they were in, when the NNP Government left office in 2008.

The Opposition believes that everyone in Grenada, including members of the Government, knows the importance of good roads, and good infrastructure in general, to a country’s development as well as to the safety and well-being of its citizens.

Therefore, any Government that allows its roads to fall apart as happened in the 1990-1995 period is not acting in the long term development interest of the country. Such inaction is highly irresponsible.

The Opposition is citing examples from nearby Caribbean countries where successive governments ensured the continuous upgrading and maintenance of key infrastructure in order to improve their attractiveness to business, maintain their competitive edge and generally provide for the health, safety and comfort of the population.
It says that the poor state of many of our roads, including first class roads, is a disincentive to business, threatens the vital tourism industry, and making life very difficult for the population.

The Opposition is therefore calling on the Government to fulfill its duty to protect and develop the nation’s roads and other physical assets, in accordance with the people’s mandate to ensure a better life for all of the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.  To fail to do so will be to put the nation’s present and future development at risk.
