By: Jenise Ferlance, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A great place to be this Friday (Mar. 30) is at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank to witness the first African play to be staged in St. Kitts.

African Pride Productions of the Windsor University School of Medicine and the St. Kitts Tourism and Culture Department have joined forces and will be presenting an epic African drama entitled ‘Ibuza - The Land of Plenty’.

A cast of 25 which includes students from Africa and St. Kitts as well as other parts of the world are all set to showcase the various skills and talents they possess through the theatre production comprising drama, dance and song.

Speaking with SKNVibes, the Director of African Pride Productions, Sunmisola Oyesiku, explained the motivation behind the staging of this epic play.

“A group of students of the Christian Students Fellowship decided to form a group (African Pride) and we were thinking of a way in which we can give back to society. Many of us, as students, have been on this island for a while and some of us have gotten to the point where we are about to leave and we just wanted to do something that would leave an imprint. We felt that one of the ways we can contribute to society and make a positive statement about ourselves was through drama.”

She further explained that the play reflects a part of the African culture and that the group focused on the Nigerian Tribe because most of the group is from that part of Africa.

Oyesiku elucidated that Ibuza tells a tale of love, victory and freedom.

"It is a story that talks about how people who once lived in peace and harmony can be brought down because of fear and pride. It is a story about how pride led to the destruction of a man and how life was able to overcome that."

She said that the play also portrays unity and reflects the core culture of Africans while telling a story of love, freedom and victory.

Oyesiku invites all to come and enjoy this epic stage play that would surely take the audience into Africa.

“We would just like everyone to come out and watch our play entitles Ibuza - The Land of Plenty. It is a story about love, a story about freedom, a story about victory. It is a story that showcases the rich African culture It involves music, it involves dance and it is our own way of giving back to the community, and we would like everyone to be a part of this.”

The play is slated for one night only (Mar. 30) and is expected to start at 7:30. Tickets may be purchased from any student of the African Pride group or at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium on the night of the show.
