Project Strong hosts Fish Fry and Fashion Fusion

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ITS first for the new year and the first since Dale Phipps told hold of the directorship, Project Strong held its traditional Fish Fry last evening (Mar. 29), featuring a not-so-traditional and welcomed twist that was much to the enjoyment of the patrons.

Considered the institution’s major fundraiser, the Fish Fry attracted several individuals from neighbouring communities and across the island who desired to feast on any of the variety of delectable fish dishes, which included tilapia and snapper – grilled or steamed – served with either bakes, vegetables or ‘funji’ (tun’ corn).

Most of the fish – Director Phipps informed SKNVibes – was caught by the students of the institution using fish pots.

Several persons supported the event and while enjoying their scrumptious meal which was prepared by ‘Chef Kelly’, and they were treated to a three-segment fashion show.

All segments featured a number of fun dresses which could be spruced up with the perfect pair of pumps and accessories for that special event or sported with fashionable flats for a night out on the town.

The models - who are teachers and students from the institution, as well as volunteers and students from the Cayon High School – obviously enjoyed themselves. And from all accounts, so did their guests.

SKNVibes understands that most, if not all, of the pieces carried by the models were made by Hollie Forest, a volunteer lecturer at Project Strong. She teaches students there on the art of dress designing and making.

The evening ended with a performance by an individual identified as “d’ Whining Man”, whose dance featured pelvic thrusts and gyrations that threw some members of the audience into a frenzy.

Next Wednesday – it is expected – Project Strong will host its second Fish Fry for the year and, according to Phipps, persons are asked to patronise.

He said the benefit of such patronage is not just the enjoyment of a tasty meal but it would be an investment in young persons of the country.
