BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RESIDENTS of New Road Development said the quietude of the Sunday (Apr. 1) afternoon atmosphere within that community was shattered by the sounds of gunfire, as three young males narrowly escaped the wrath of two gunmen.

On arrival at the scene, SKNVibes learned that while three young men of that community were seated on a bench on the western side of the main road leading into New Road Development in the vicinity of Luther Kelly Street and another man was cleaning his car opposite them, two men (one wearing a red ‘hoodie’) came from the southern direction and started shooting at the three men.

One resident claimed that the three men had observed when the gunmen were approaching and one of them said “these men don’t live in this area and they seem suspicious”.

“The men who were sitting on the bench decided to run in different directions and the gunmen started shooting at them. One of the them, who seemed to be the target, ran into a nearby yard and jumped the rear fence and a number of other fences to escape the gunmen as they continue to shoot at him.

“I believe that they fired about 10 shots but the three young men escaped uninjured. And the man who was cleaning his car also had to run as the gunmen were shooting indiscriminatingly and one or more bullets hit his gas tank causing gasolene to leak out,” the resident said.

This media house also learnt that the gunmen gave chase by also scaling many fences but were unable to locate the young man.

However, a strategy employed by the police resulted in one suspect being apprehended and is currently assisting the lawmen with their investigations.

It is said that instead of going directly to the crime scene, officers drove in various directions and caught the suspect on a street west of the main thoroughfare to New Road Development.

He was taken back to the crime scene where a number of residents positively identified him as one of the gunmen.

SKNVibes however learned that no weapon was found on the suspect, but his hands would be tested for gunshot residue.

Also observed at the scene were investigators collecting a number of spent shells which they claimed would be taken into custody for analysis.
