Constable Stephen (middle) walks away after he gave the car keys back to the grateful lady motorist. The offending white car is seen in the foreground.

    Charlestown Nevis
(February 16, 2005) -- When a lady motorist parked her car in the Samuel Hunkins Drive parking lot in Charlestown, in the vicinity of the TDC Plaza, on Wednesday morning, little did she know that she would need the services of the traffic police to drive out.

At about 11:30 am, she came back to her car, but could not reverse out, as a white car had been illegally double parked leaving her with very little space to manoeuvre out without scratching other vehicles including the offending one.

Two police officers in a traffic police car of the Nevis Division of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force that was on patrol saw the ladys predicament and came to her assistance. The taller of the two policemen removed his hat and left it in the police car and went to the ladys assistance.

Since the double-parked car was locked and the fact that it had not entirely blocked the ladys car, the only way the traffic police officer could help was to get into her car and after three attempts, he managed to twist the car out of the tight space. The small crowd that had gathered to see what was happening clapped in praise of the police officer.

As it turned out, the traffic police officer was No 320 Constable James Stephen, who on Friday evening was named 2004 Best Constable of the Year for Nevis at the Police Award Ceremony held at the Old Manor Hotel. After he gave the keys to the grateful lady motorist, he promptly wrote a ticket that he posted on the windscreen of the offending car.
