CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - FORM 4A1 students Yunoka Flemming and Kalea Clarke of the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS) emerged winners of the recently held CARICOM Regional Quiz.

The students and their coach, Anselm Caines, returned to Nevis this morning after a long and hard academic battle.

The proud coach, who is also a teacher at CSS, spoke of the experience.

“It was a very thrilling experience, a great learning experience for the children.

I thought it was a good opportunity for them to interact with their peers from

throughout the entire Caribbean region and interact with various CARICOM officials,” he said.

He added that it is important for students to be familiar with their region.

“So often we speak to the issue of our young people not knowing enough about our Caribbean history and culture and I think that this really provided a good opportunity for them to really learn more about that,” Caines said.

He also made an appeal to other young persons in St. Kitts and Nevis to realise their true potential.

“Let me just say to all the younger persons out there that this should serve as a shining example that hard work plus perseverance plus an unyielding commitment to succeed will always create success and victory.

And let me say by extension to all Kittitians and Nevisians and by extension the entire Caribbean region, that here in St. Kitts and Nevis we do indeed have competent and intelligent people who know what to do and have the potential for great things,” Caines said.

Flemming’s father and Clarke’s mother, who waited at the Charlestown Pier to welcome their children, recorded their excitement and offered words of congratulations to them on the recent victory.

The students participated in a national competition between secondary school students of St. Kitts and Nevis, where they were selected to represent the Federation. They then participated in the zonal rounds of the competition and defeated former champions Guyana.    ~~Adz:Right~~

The finals were held in Antigua and Barbuda, where they battled against St. Lucia in what was described as a “nail biting” competition. They were also dominant in matches against Montserrat and Trinidad and Tobago.

The students recorded their gratitude to parents, teachers, coaches and teammates.
