Basseterre, St. Kitts (February 17, 2005): The Conaree Community Centre was the first stop on a tour of community centers in Constituency #8, undertaken by Ministers Honourable Cedric Liburd and Honourable Earl Asim Martin last week.

At the Conaree site, Public Works Chief Engineer Mr. Delon James gave the specifics of the nearly completed center.  He said that the building is a two-story reinforced concrete structure with the top floor having a southern and northern terrace, along with a medical office, general office, storage space, and a computer room with a capacity for 20 computers.  The bottom floor consists of a dining section and lounge, a kitchen, a library and a stage as well as male and female bathrooms.

Mr. James explained that that the building has a 2,500 square foot capacity.  The contractor representing Huggins and Huggins Construction noted that there had been quite a few delays since construction began in June last year.  These included having to change epicore suppliers, a delay in concrete pouring because of the unavailability of stones from the quarry and material purchasing delays.

Mr. James gave a hand-over date of the end of March, although he assured that all of the work would be complete by the end of February with the exception of the installation of the windows that were presently on order.

The Conaree Community Centre is being built at a cost of $580,000. The Republic of China are the main sponsors.

Parliamentary Representative for the area Honourable Cedric Liburd said that despite the delay, the community center would be exceptional once it is complete.  He elaborated that it will benefit the people of Conaree greatly, for they will be able to use it for various purposes, due to its modern resourceful structure.

He also expressed gratitude to the Departments of Public Works and Community Affairs, the contractor as well as other contributors.  Special mention was made of the Republic of China on Taiwan for financing the project.

Minister responsible for Public Works Honourable Earl Asim Martin also thanked the Republic of China on Taiwan for being the main sponsor by providing $580,000.  He also thanked the contractor, the Public Works Department and other parties involved in the project.
