St. Georges, Grenada – CITIZENS of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique took to the polls today (July 8th) to decide their nation’s leader and governing body. The fight is between the governing New National Party (NNP) of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, which is seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive term, and the Tillman Thomas-led National Democratic Congress (NDC).The political parties will contest a total of 15 seats.

Political analysts have speculated that although a loss for Mitchell would mean a lot on a personal level, it could set the ball rolling towards the eventual demise of the NNP administration.

Grenada recently signed an agreement with the Washington-based Organization of American States (OAS) that speaks to the conditions under which a team of observers will oversee the general elections.

According to Grenada's Permanent Representative to the OAS, Ambassador Denis Antoine, “By inviting the OAS to observe the country's electoral process, the government is also stating its openness for the member states and for the world to see that Grenada has a fully functional democracy”.

He also said that the ‘contentious nature’ of the poll had prompted the OAS to increase the numbers.

The 30-plus observers with the OAS Electoral Observation Mission will be supervised by Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin and the team is said to be the largest Electoral Observation Mission that the organization has ever sent to a Caribbean country. ~~Adz:Right~~
