VG residents voice infrastructural concerns to MCW minister

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, May 7th, 2012  -  A number of Virgin Gorda residents took advantage of the opportunity to dialogue with Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool regarding infrastructural concerns when the Minster held office hours at the Vanterpool Administration Building.

    The minister’s visit to Virgin Gorda which took place on Friday May 4th was a part of Government’s objective to make regular visits to the sister islands. “We had a good day on Friday with a number of persons who visited us,” Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

     

    The main concerns expressed by the residents according to the minister had to do with drainage, employment, road improvement in the Valley and the installation of guard rails on the new alternate road in North Sound. Minister Vanterpool stated that his ministry will hold office hours on Virgin Gorda the last Friday of each month to give people a chance to discuss issues that they may have.

     

    In addition to the office hours held, the minister and his team, which comprised ministry officials and officers from the Public Works Department, went on site visits. Of particular importance was the visit to the Public Works Depot which is currently situated on the same compound that houses the Virgin Gorda Elderly Home.

     

    “We want to relocate the Public Works Department from sitting on the senior’s compound. “Minister Skelton voiced urgent concerns to relocate the Public Works Department as it is a health hazards for the seniors. So we are planning to be out of there by the 15 June,” Minister Vanterpool revealed.

     

    The relocation of PWD is twofold according to the Minister, first primarily to improve the standard of living for the seniors in addition to providing a better working environment for the department.

     

    The minister noted that interim measures will be put in place to be able to meet the 15 June deadline and that the PWD Director has assured him that the he will do whatever is necessary to meet this deadline.

     

    The Ministry of Communications and Works is committed to the continued development and maintenance of the Territory’s public infrastructure.
