PAM's May Day Fair deemed a success

Some 100 new registered party members

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - OVER two thousand persons turned out over the course of yesterday (May 7) to participate in the People's Action Movement’s (PAM) May Day Fair.

The annual event was held at the political party's Headquarters at Lockhart Street and saw adults young and old, as well as children of all ages out in their numbers to kick back, relax and enjoy a special day that is given in honour of those persons who had toiled hard during the year.

Beginning with breakfast at 7:30 a.m., the 'breakfast crew' served some 500 persons with a number of delectable dishes; soon after the 'lunch crew' took over and served a variety of meals.

Persons flocked the kitchen area to dig into the scrumptious meal while others chilled at the bars with drinks in hand.

According to PAM's Chairman Selwyn 'Rusty' Liburd, the event had a slow start due to he inclement weather but quickly picked up as the day progressed.

"We were off to a slow start because of the weather but during the course of the day the crowd picked up."

Activities included the usual bouncing castles for the children, lucky dips and the sale of flower plants.

A number of Deejays were on the scene to 'keep it jiggy' with popular selections from the local bands as well as some from notable Caribbean artistes.

Liburd explained that the major activity for the day was the Membership Card Drive in which a large number of persons had registered as PAM members.

"We had about 100 persons registered today as new members of the People's Action Movement. As registered members, it gives them certain benefits within the party such as where major decision making is concerned. They received a card which is renewed annually."

The Chairman said that even though there were persons who did not remain throughout event, members of the political party were pleased with the turnout.

"All in all, we are happy with our crowd. We've had well over 2 000 persons pass through the Fair. Not everyone stayed; some passed through and got something to eat and drink. Our turnout was excellent this year, we are proud of it."

The event reached its capacity when the ‘Sweetest Band in the World’, Small Axe, took over the stage and rocked the crowd with some of their popular tunes including their latest - the ‘Banana Song’.

The event winded down sometime around midnight as persons returned to their residences after a day of fun and relaxation to prepare for the day ahead.

"This event is put on for the supporters so that they would have something to do on May Day. We do not call it Labour Day…we call it May Day. Instead of just the Labour activities, we have our own activities. It is a place for them to come and identify and represent with us," Liburd explained.
