Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, May 8th, 2012  - To meet the growing emergency demands of the Territory, Government continues with plans to establish a 911 Emergency Call Handling Centre.

According to Acting Chief Fire Officer Mr. William Penn, the call handling centre will allow for seamless operation between all emergency response agencies in the Territory. He added that “We are excited about providing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and have been working more closely with Peebles Hospital in response to emergency calls.”

“We want to ensure that more of our officers are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). It is obvious that we are faced with the reality that we have to re-think and continue to expand our modus operandi to meet the new and growing emergency demands of the public we serve,” Mr. Penn told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

Mr. Penn expressed that himself and Mr. Jose DeCastro, an architect with the Public Works Department who is charged with designing the centre, traveled to the Cayman Islands to visit a call handling centre. “We exchanged ideas, and learned about different areas and ways for implementing the administrative and physical aspects of the project,” Mr. Penn recalled.

“It is always good when we can foster relationships with our Overseas Territory (OT) counterparts and share ideas and learn from each other about the effective and strategic ways of developing our respective institutions.”

The Emergency Call Handling Centre, which will be housed at the fire department, will facilitate accessibility and timely response, coordination among emergency response agencies, and aid with the effective transfer of vital information during emergencies.
