Condor and Harris not targets of Labour Party’s mobilisation

The Right Honourable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PRIME MINISTER and Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has denied claims that his recent calls for members of his party to mobilise have something to do specifically with rumoured beleaguered Ministers Sam Condor and Dr. Timothy Harris.

A female caller to Tuesday’s (May 8) edition of Dr. Douglas’ radio programme, ‘Ask the PM’, indicated that, according to information she received, plans are afoot to have Deputy Prime Minister Condor, who is the Deputy Leader of the SKNLP, and Minister Harris, Chairman of the Party, expelled therefrom during its upcoming convention.

She explained that further information received suggests that the expulsion would be done by way of passage of resolution.

The caller questioned Dr. Douglas about whether or not the call for the SKNLP members to mobilise is a direct link to rumoured expulsion plan.

“…I want to make it clear, my mobilisation call has nothing to do with anybody in particular in the Labour Party except all of the supporters of the Labour Party, from leadership right down to the rank and file…” Dr. Douglas explained in response to the caller.

He elucidated that his call for mobilisation was for the members of the party to do what is necessary to keep SKNLP in power.

“My call for the Party to mobilise…this is a political party, political party is to win elections. And if it already in government, it is to stay in government. It must do all that it can to stay in government. And so the political party of the day must always be mobilised.

“I made a special call for mobilisation because I think our people need to be mobilised now more than ever before. The Party called for support in terms of the march, it got the support. It has a lot of things to do; it has to tackle a lot of the issues that we called for support from our supporters in the march to demonstrate. And now a lot of work has to be done. We have to make sure that we get on with the agenda, the agenda of doing whatever action is necessary for this party to stay in power. This Party is not going to cede power to any other political party in this country; it has to be taken from it.”

Dr. Douglas urged that supporters of the SKNLP must be ready to win at the polls whenever the next election is called.

“And so my supporters - the Labour supporters - are being put on notice that you must become mobilised now; mobilised in every form so that you will be able to win the election whenever the election is called.

“We as a government will continue to manage the affairs of the country but the party must become mobilised to win the next election and keep your party in government, because there are some – it would appear – who are bent on taking the government out of office. But they don’t want to fight for it, they want to create confusion in our party so that we can give the government to them. They got to fight for it.”
