    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, May 9th, 2012  –  Beginning today, a cohort of secondary school business and social studies teachers will receive training in financial services as the Ministry of Education and Culture continues its stride to “Create a Culture of Excellence”

    Starting Fall 2012, the teaching of Financial Services as a new subject area for fourth form students will commence and this week’s training with secondary teachers will work to advance its implementation.

     

    Acting Deputy Chief Education Officer Mrs. Jillian Douglas-Phillip said the teaching of Financial Services as a new subject area is an initiative created by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

     

    “This is an effort that the Ministry has undertaken to ensure that students are more aware of the Pillar industries of the Virgin Islands. Over the next three days, teachers will receive practical instruction from leading financial services industry professionals and use the concepts learned to instruct students”

     

    Secondary schools teachers from the British Virgin Islands Seventh-day Adventist High, St. Georges Secondary and Elmore Stoutt High schools will this afternoon receive an overview of the Financial Services Industry from Mr. Robert Mathavious, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the Financial Services Commission while Mrs. Lorna Smith, OBE, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of LGS Associates and former Director of the International Affairs Secretariat will present on “The BVI Advantage”.

     

    Tomorrow’s sessions will feature instruction on Incorporations: How Companies Work, the Global use of BVI Companies, Investment Business, Mutual Funds, Hedge Funds, the Use of Corporate Structures, Insurance Captives and the VI Shipping Register.

     

    Friday’s sessions will feature presentations by Mr. Julien Johnson, the Chief Operating Officer of the Financial Investigation Agency on “Financial Crime and Money Laundering”, Mrs. Joycelyn Murraine, the Managing Director of ScotiaBank (BVI) Limited and President of the BVI Bank Association will speak on “Careers in Banking” while Ms. Dawn Smith, the former Director of the BVI London House will present on, “A Legal Career in Financial Services”.

     

    Mr. Ross Munro, a partner at Harney Westwood and Riegels will present on “Investment Business, Building International Structures that include BVI” while Ms. Rosemarie Flax, the Managing Director of Mossack Fonseca and Co. BVI Limited will present on “Getting to the Top of the game in Financial Services”. Mr. Simon Filmer, the Managing Director of Nerine Trust Company (BVI) Limited will present on “The Successful Career Path in Financial Services.”

     

    The training will be held at the National Curriculum Redesign Project Conference Room located on the fourth floor in the RJT Edifice.

     

    The Financial Services Orientation Training with secondary school teachers serves to develop the human capacity of the Territory’s educators as the Ministry of Education and Culture fulfills its mandate to create a “Culture of Excellence.”
