Nevis Court Round-Up…Man to serve two weeks for battery

    CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – ONE man was sentenced to two weeks imprisonment for battery on a female and seven others were fined a total of EC$5 600 for traffic and drugs offences on Tuesday (May 8) by Her Worship Yasmine Clarkeat the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court, Nevis.

     

    Morning Star resident Tyrelle Hanley was convicted and sentenced to serve two weeks at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) for battery on Cheressa Odaine. The offence was committed in Charlestown on Friday, April 20, 2012.

     

    For carrying abroad an offensive weapon, Damien Powell of Cotton Ground was convicted and fined $500 to be paid within or serve a one-month prison term. This offence was committed Tuesday, April 24, 2012 in Charlestown.

     

    Three individuals, Damrique Brookes of Fothergills, Jermaine Wilkinson of Cotton Ground and Dominique Newton, were fined a total of EC$2 100 for possession of a quantity of controlled substance.

     

    Brookes, who was found in possession of a quantity of cannabis on Saturday (Apr. 21) in Charlestown, has to pay EC$800 in two months. If in default, he will be incarcerated for a two-month period.

     

    Wilkinson was also found in possession of cannabis. The offence was committed in Cotton Ground on Thursday (Apr. 19) and he was fined EC$800 to be paid three months or serve one month at HMP.

     

    And Newton, also convicted for possession of cannabis, was fined EC$500 to be paid over a three-month period or serve one month in prison. The offence was committed in Stoney Grove on Tuesday (Apr. 24).

     

    For traffic offences, Ricky Hill of Beach Road was convicted and cautioned for not wearing a seat belt on February 2, 2012 at Pinney’s Road, while Abraham Dasent of Cherry Gardens, Marvin Lewis of Government Road and Adrian Hill were convicted and fined a total of EC$3 000.

     

    Dasent was fined EC$500 for driving without licence and a similar amount for driving without insurance. The offences were committed on Friday (May 5). Each fine has to be paid within three months or he has to serve a combined period of two months in prison.

     

    Hill was fined EC$1 000 for driving without due care and attention in Cotton Ground on Wednesday, February 29, 2012. He had four months within which to pay the fine or spend a month at HMP.

     

    Lewis was fined EC$500 for driving without insurance and another EC$500 for driving without licence. Like Dasent, each fine has to be paid within three months or he has to serve a combined period of two months in prison.
