New wing at Francis Lettsome Primary

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  May 14th, 2012  –  Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn made his intention clear on Friday at the dedication and handover ceremony for the new wing at the Francis Lettsome Primary School, “It is my intention to develop the students to have a passion for learning and being in a modern and comfortable facility will encourage this,” he said.

    “This new facility will have a positive impact on the learning achievements of the students who attend this school and importantly the overall safety and health of our students and teachers and other persons who may visit the school,” the Minister emphasized.

     

    The Minister also stated that the education system has now moved in the direction of creating a culture of excellence and schools must be that place that generates interest in our young people to reward them in everything that they attempt. The new wing houses additional classrooms, a library resource centre, kitchen, restroom and the Principal’s Office.

     

    Hon Walwyn concluded his remarks encouraging students to, “Take good care of this facility, take ownership of this new structure and have pride in the way you help to maintain it and I believe through a well rounded education system that generates a lifelong love of learning for present students and those to come will help the Virgin Islands to overcome any challenge and it starts with having improved facilities such as this one here that is now an inspiring environment for learning”.

     

    Also giving remarks at the ceremony was Deputy Premier, Minister for Natural Resources and Labour and 7th District Representative Dr. the Honourable Kedrick Pickering who expressed that, “The school has arrived at a position where we have an infrastructure that we can be proud of, students now have a comfortable environment in which they can learn, and teachers have a better environment to teach.

     

    “It is now the responsibility of all of us Government, Parents/Teachers Association (PTA) and the community at large to ensure that the school is not only maintained but that it grows from strength to strength,” he urged.

     

    Minister Pickering continued, “We want our students to dream big and if our schools are going to be the breeding ground for intellectual stimulation we are going to have to get our students to think big and to dream as they will help to make the world a better place.”

     

    Honourable Marlon A. Penn 8th District Representative in his remarks stated, “This institution has set the standard as to how educational facilities in our territory should be built. With this modern facility I only see academic records of this school improving. The standard set at this institution is commendable.”

     

    Also on hand at the ceremony was Project Manager Mr. Allen Wheatley, Architect Ms. Avaline Potter, engineer Mr. Jerome Frett and from International Construction Mr. Neville Smith and Mr. Jerome McMillan.

     

    Remarks were also given by Ag. Chief Education Officer Ms. Beverlie Brathwaite, Principal Ms. Elena Fahie, Financial Secretary Mr. Neil Smith, Class five teacher Mrs. Paulette Chalwell. Performances were done by the students of the Francis Lettsome Primary School which included their fungi band.

     

    The Government of the Virgin Islands intent is to foster, promote and improve the educational facilities in the Territory, through the efforts of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
