Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola, May 18th, 2012   -  The Fire and Rescue Services Department urges the community, over the next few weeks, as the Territory celebrates different activities to keep safety at the forefront.

“Over the course of the next two weeks, we will have celebrations such as Her Majesty’s Birthday and Diamond Jubilee, Music Fest, the Islands of the World Conference, Poker Run and Public Service Week activities and we just want to remind the public to know the safety guidelines wherever they assemble,” Acting Chief Fire Officer, Mr. William Penn told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

“As it relates to the Music Fest, I am encouraging proprietors and vendors to check cooking ranges for maintenance update prior to the events. Ensure that portable fire fighting equipment is functional and that an emergency safety plan is in place and shared with staff,” Mr. Penn said.

Mr. Penn also noted that a team of fire fighters and EMTs will be on standby at the staging area, which will be located near the glass factory, in the event of an emergency, during the Music Fest.

Mr. Penn also encouraged operators of vessels that will be participating in the Poker Run race to check all safety devices and ensure that fire extinguishers are operational. Special attention should be paid to the engine vacuum system which ventilates the compartment from the build up of gas vapours, which can ultimately lead to fire and or explosion, according to Mr. Penn.

Mr. Penn concluded that persons should know the location of the nearest emergency exits and what is expected during an emergency to ensure that fun and celebrations do not have negative consequences.

The Fire and Rescue Service is committed to protecting life and property from the effects of fire and all other man-made and natural accidents and disasters.
