Documentary on Eastern Caribbean Court to Air Locally

~~Adz:Left~~ ROADTOWN, Tortola- A 90-minute documentary about the history and development of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) will air on local television stations beginning this week.

The video was produced by the ECSC to commemorate its 40th anniversary in 2007. The programme, entitled An Evolving Court examines the establishment of the court, its growth, and current initiatives, including judicial reform.

Local practitioner Lewis Hunte, Q.C., and Resident Judge, Hon. Justice Indra Hariprashad-Charles are among those who were interviewed for the documentary. There is also footage of Virgin Islands court proceedings and institutions.

Deputy Registrar of the High Court Ms. Nadine Whyte said that the documentary highlights the progress that the Court has made over its first 40 years. “The programme also details the ongoing reform projects–– ranging from mediation to the establishment of a commercial court–– and how we are adapting to meet the needs of the region,” she said.

Ms. Whyte noted that as part of the Virgin Islands’ observance of the Court’s 40th anniversary in 2007, the Deputy Governor’s Office and the Department of Information and Public Relations produced a video about the history of the court in the Virgin Islands.

“Video is a good media through which to educate the public about the operations and future goals of the Court,” Ms. Whyte said. “One of the ECSC’s objectives on a regional level is to humanize the Court, and this is one way in which we are achieving this goal.”

An Evolving Court will air locally on Caribbean Broadcasting Network (Channel 51) and J-TV (Channel 55).
On CBN, the documentary will air on Thursday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m. and on Friday, July 18 at 7 p.m. It will air on J-TV (Channel 55) on Thursday, July 17 at 6 p.m. and Friday, July 18 at 6 p.m. The documentary will also air at other times as programming allows.

In addition, arrangements are being made for the documentary to be available for viewing on demand at BVI Web TV (www.bviwebtv.com)

The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court is the court of record for nine jurisdictions: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Montserrat. It was established on February 27, 1967.
