Press Release

ST. GEORGE, Grenada, May 23rd , 2012:  Grenada’s Opposition Leader, Dr the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, has called on the prime Minister to look into recent reports of breaking and entering of parliamentary offices,  and to intervene where necessary to ensure that the integrity of the voter registration process  is safeguarded and guaranteed.

Speaking at his Party’s massive public rally held in the parish of St John’s last Sunday evening, the former Grenadian leader advised the gathering that information reaching his office indicate that two parliamentary offices were broken into sometime between the night of May 17 and the morning of May 18, 2012;   and that cameras and computer systems used for registering voters were removed.

Dr. Mitchell pointed out that these incidents, both of which reportedly occurred in the St. George East constituency could seriously compromise the entire electoral process, not only in the relevant constituency, but in the nation as a whole.

According to Dr Mitchell these break-ins were a very strange coincidence, happening in the same constituency on the same night. One could only surmise that they were deliberate and had some specific purpose. He told the gathering that this was another setback for the many citizens who have been complaining bitterly that the entire process of registering and receiving their registration cards is very frustrating.

Many  radio call- in programs are now been inundated with calls from persons who have been registered for over four months and are yet to receive their cards even when they were told the cards would be ready in two weeks.

Dr Mitchell is calling upon the Prime Minister to take the steps required to make a determination very shortly as to the way forward, since the incidents coupled with the slow pace of registration has the potential to undermine the electoral process and compromise the office of Governor General.

He notes that with the severe problems being experienced, there may be a need to extend the process beyond the set closing date of July 8th 2012 if a comprehensive voters list is to be guaranteed.
