Calling more businesses to make a green pledge before June 1

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, May 22nd, 2012   –   Only two weeks remain to the Friday June 1, 2012 deadline to make a “Green Pledge” as a part of the 2012 Environment Month (June) celebrations under the theme, “The Green Economy: Does it Include You?”

    Conservation and Fisheries Department Environmental Officer, Ms. Angela Burnett Penn speaking with the Department of Information and Public Relations said, “Through the Green Pledge Initiative, all BVI businesses, community organizations and Government departments are being encouraged to make a pledge to reduce their environmental impact or to improve their environmental practices and commitment for 2012 and beyond. “Green Pledges may include, actions to reduce energy and water use, to reduce waste production, to support environmental initiatives or to promote environmental awareness,” Ms. Penn expressed.

     

    The Conservation and Fisheries Department (CFD), its parent Ministry, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour and partnering agency, the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) are leading the way with their own Green Pledges. CFD is pledging to reduce its paper use by 25%, its energy use by 10% and to eliminate plastic cups in the office for staff use. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour is pledging to reduce waste production in 2011. The BVIEC is pledging to cut its 2012 energy use by at least 7.5%, reduce paper use by 20% and actively educate the public about energy conservation.

     

    Ms. Penn added that so far, the Conservation and Fisheries Department has received forms from the Department of Information and Public Relations, VI Fire and Rescue Department, the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing, CCP, Cooper Island Beach Club, Deloitte and Touche, First Bank, First Caribbean International Bank, Sail Caribbean Divers, Sebastian’s on the Beach Hotel, Virgin Queen Restaurant and Pub, ZCCR 94.1 FM.

     

    The Department continues to urge all businesses, departments and organizations that have not already made a Green Pledge to do so as early as possible before the Friday June 1, 2012 deadline. The Department also encourages the public to download the Green Pledge Guide available at www.bvidef.org which contains pledge ideas and resources to make participation easy.

     

    All organizations that make a Pledge will be rewarded with the Department’s Official Seal of the Green Pledge for public display and will also be recognized on the Department’s website and invited to promote their Pledge by participating in the Department’s annual Parade for the Planet, being dubbed this year as the “Parade of Pledges,” slated for Wednesday June 13, 2012.

     

    The Green Pledge registration form is available at the Department’s website www.bvidef.org and can be submitted by email to cfd@gov.vg, fax 494-2670 or delivered to the Department at the Quastisky Building, Road Town.
