Our Young are dying – one way or another

By: Lorna Callender, SKNVibes

    A REFLECTION

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - Like a tongue to a broken tooth, our minds keep returning time and time again to ask why, why, why - how could this happen to our beloved artiste-icon Kevin ‘Masud Sadiki’ Donovon?

How could this happen to one whose positivity, joy of life, and perennial smile had lifted many a spirit and made him a role model and mentor for the weaker minded and those faltering along life’s pathway?

The whole nation searches for answers and hopes that finding answers would take the jagged edges off this raw, hurting tragedy and help our minds to settle down, satisfied that there was something to explain why we were having this needless shock to our system.

It is so uncanny that as soon as we get a lull in the number of youth dying from vengeful bullets, we witness an increase in the number of youth dying in other ways.

Within a relatively short period we’ve had to bury young people like Dwayne Sturge, DJ Nisbett of Cayon and Singing Angie among others ... hence we still see funerals continuing

It has become the norm to see ‘Young People Funerals’ whereas in times past this was a rare phenomenon.

An extraordinary number of parents are now witnessing the funerals of their offspring...and it feels wrong...shouldn’t it be otherwise?

Our minds circle wide to search the universe for answers. Must the Grim Reaper have its pre-destined quota? If so, why Masud of all people, who had so much to offer?

Do the good really die young? – as we have heard from the days of our youth? And was Masud so good he had to go?

There are far more questions than answers and our tongues will return to that broken tooth to smooth the edges of our grief.

In the world of metaphysics, there are those who say the universe is contracting. In China, having more than one child is outlawed so soon the concept of sisters and brothers will be unknown to their families.

Would they explain that this is why so many of our youth are dying?

The rise in same sex relationships is also regarded as a sign of contraction of the universe which alternates with its expansion when man and women will again be allowed to “be fruitful and multiply”.

The mystery of Masud’s death takes us to the edge of the universe searching for answers, probing for closure.

We sincerely hope that Masud is now at peace. If his death came about at his own hands, we can only apply this quotation to him:

“You say I'm always happy, and that I'm good at what I do, but what you'll never realize is, I'm a damn good actor too.” – author unknown.

But if he died at the hands of another, we can only say that that person is an enemy of our country and indeed an enemy of all that is positive and wholesome – an enemy of mankind.

To the wife and family of Masud Sadiki we extend our heartfelt sympathy and trust that fond memories of him will comfort you. May his soul rest in peace.
