ROADTOWN, Tortola – Mr. Henry Potter, a Roads Foreman and the Survey Unit of the Public Works Department (PWD) were recognised as employee and section of the quarter respectively at the department’s quarterly general staff meeting held earlier this month.

The recognitions, which are an initiative at PWD and the second set to be awarded this year, are a motivational tool implemented to improve employee morale.

Acting Director of the PWD Dr. Drexel Glasgow said it is important to recognise employees for outstanding work.

“Employees are the backbone of any organisation and by showing them that the work they are doing is appreciated, will not only boost employee morale but will motivate employees to do their best at all times,” Dr. Glasgow said.

“In any organisation that you work in, it is important to maximise the raw output and give of your best regardless of the limited resources that might be available to you,” Dr. Glasgow added.

In his capacity as a Roads Foreman, Mr. Potter is responsible for the upkeep of the Territory’s infrastructure by ensuring that major roads are traversable.  The Survey Unit provides services required in the planning and execution of nearly every form of development, including the building and construction of roads, drainage solutions, mapping and the definition of legal boundaries for land ownership in the Territory.

The employee and section awards for the first quarter of 2008 went to Justin Mactavious and the Quantity Surveying Unit, respectively.

The Mission of the Public Works Department is to provide a safe, practical, efficient, economically and environmentally sound infrastructure that is well designed, constructed and maintained in accordance to recognised codes and standards that is in harmony with the Territory’s social and economic goals.
