Press Release

BASSETERRE, St Kitts, May 23rd 2012 - Church workers and social and community leaders will soon be better equipped to counsel young and mature persons in need.  The Zion Moravian Church is currently preparing to host a six-day intensive workshop on Basic Counselling Skills.  It is hoped that participants would be enlightened on a wide variety of topics including effective listening techniques, building and maintaining confidentiality, crisis intervention techniques and fostering a therapeutic counselling relationship.

According to a spokesperson from the organizing committee, the Zion Moravian Church felt that the upcoming sessions were needed in an effort to assist with the management of psychological and physiological issues associated with the prevailing social ills.  In recent times the Federation has seen an increase in violent crimes and its detrimental effects on our developing society.  Additionally, there are other prominent social ills which currently plague our society.  These include teenage pregnancy, behavioral, disciplinary and psychological problems and widespread sexually transmitted diseases.

“Whenever there is a crime, both the victim’s family and the perpetrator’s family are affected.  The effects are far-reaching and have severe consequences on our social, economical, psychological and healthcare environments.  As a Church, we have a social responsibility to ensure that we are moulding persons with good character and also reaching out to persons who are in need”, said Rev Hilton Joseph, Pastor of the Zion Moravian Church.

For more information, please contact the Church’s office on Victoria Road or via telephone 465 2402 or 662 1777.  Registration closes on Tuesday, 30 May, 2012.
