    Benjamin brothers to be tried at next Assizes…

    Husband of the late Michelle Weekes Benjamin, Leroy Benjamin Jr.
    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE case in which William ‘Willy-esco’ Benjamin, Leroy Benjamin Jr., Shervin ‘Squeaky’ George and Khoy ‘Red Rat’ Jeffers are to be tried for murder, was yesterday traversed to the September 2008 Criminal Assizes.

     

    Appearing before Justice Francis Belle yesterday at the Basseterre High Court, the four accused were told that their case was traversed and they would have to return to court on Tuesday, September 23. The case was scheduled for trial at the beginning of the May 2008 Criminal Assizes.

     

    The four men are charged with the October 2006 murder of Michelle Benjamin Weekes, the wife of Benjamin Jr., whose body was found on November 1, 2006 in the unfinished septic tank of a Rosemary Lane building that was under construction.

     

    Some 30 prosecution witnesses are expected to give evidence when the case would have been tried.

    The brother-in law of Michelle Weekes-Benjamin, William 'Willy' Benjamin
    of Clyde Williams of Old Road Village, was to have his case heard during the current Assizes this also was traversed to the upcoming Assizes.

     

    Williams died on the evening of Friday, August 3, 2007 after he was shot in the stomach. The incident occurred in Old Road.

     

    And the case of “having a firearm in possession with intent to endanger life” brought against Collin ‘Izum’ Matthew, Sheldon Cannonier, Dion Roberts and Tyrone Fyfield was also traversed for hearing at the September 2008 Criminal Assizes. 

     

    The men made their first appearance before the Basseterre High Court on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 and the case was set to be heard on July 2, but, for reasons not made public, a later date was given for the hearing. Yesterday, however, Justice Belle told the men that they would have to wait yet again for their case to be tried.

     

    Ramie Gumbs, Jamal Parris, Karim Dickenson and Devon Wattley who were charged with two separate incidents of “robbery” also had their cases traversed to the September 2008 Criminal Assizes.
