By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE of the individuals involved in Sunday evening’s (May 27) traffic accident along the Kim Collins Highway has been charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

SGT Calvin Amory of the Traffic Department told SKNVibes that following investigations into the two-vehicle crash, Varum Atre of Frigate Bay was formally arrested and charged with “driving under the influence of alcohol”.

The incident took place at about 6:30 p.m. between the motor jeep Atre was driving (P9397) and Sunil Liddie of Lime Kiln who was driving motorcar PA4668.

The Traffic Department advised that according to its investigations, Atre was travelling from the roundabout in the vicinity of the airport towards the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, while Liddie was travelling in the opposite direction. A collision occurred between the two vehicles which left both badly damaged and on the grass on the eastern side of the road.

The scene was processed by the Traffic Department and both drivers and the two passengers of P9397 were transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for treatment.

With the exception of Liddie, all were discharged.

Head of the Traffic Department – Inspector Cromwell Henry – informed SKNVibes that Atre was subsequently released on bail. He said Atre was also informed of the Traffic Department’s intention of prosecuting him for careless driving.

Inspector Henry also added that the possibility exists that charges would be laid against Liddie following further investigations into the incident.

Liddie who had complained of chest pains following the accident – as SGT Amory informed – was still in hospital up to this morning.
