Press Release (EMU)

(EMU) – BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 31st, 2012  --    Another unique and exciting Tourism product will be officially launched at Crab Hill in Sandy Point on Thursday May 31 under the auspices of the Governor Genera His Excellency Governor General Sir Cuthbert Sebastian.

Manager of Special Projects at the St. Kitts Tourism Authority Randolph Hamilton has announced the ground breaking for the Amazing Grace Experience which is included in local activities marking the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The background to this attraction, which Mr. Hamilton feels is going to be a favourite among tourists, is a dramatic story in which the life of foul- mouthed slave trader John Newton went on to write one of the most famous and well loved songs of all time - “Amazing Grace”.

The Amazing Grace Experience Time Line 1725 to 1748 will feature the story behind the song and its connection to St. Kitts. This untold story is expected to help to differentiate St. Kitts, as a destination, from its regional and international competitors, thus, enhancing the appeal of the destination to visitors.

“The Amazing Grace Experience further distinguishes the rich cultural heritage in the Federation and further emphasizes that heritage tourism is indeed a cash cow that is key to the long-term sustainable growth and development of tourism in St. Kitts and Nevis,” Mr. Hamilton said.

According to its official website www.amazinggraceexperience.com.

“Newton wrote "Amazing Grace" to chart his personal spiritual journey which began with his miraculous escape from death. He went on to become a prolific hymn writer and, later in life, to mentor William Wilberforce in his fight against the Slave Trade. He was a changed man thanks to his encounter with God's Amazing Grace and his visit to Sandy Point, St. Kitts was an integral part of this turning point.”

Special Projects Manager Hamilton made a special plea to residents and Sandy Pointers in particular, to visit the site of the launch and promised that it would be a highly educational experience, raising their awareness of significant historical occurrences.
