BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A number of persons were recently penalised for breaching the Federation’s Drug Laws.

Appearing before the District ‘B’ Magistrate Court, Darren Partick of Tabernacle Village was convicted of “possession of cannabis”.  He was ordered to pay $800 in three months or serve a three-month sentence at Her Majesty’s Prison.

Having appeared before the District ‘C’ Magistrate Court, Shawn Powell, a Craddock Road resident, was convicted of one count of “possession of cannabis” and was ordered by the court to pay a $1 500 fine. The sum is to be paid within the next two months and if he fails to do so a six-month custodial sentence would be imposed.

According to a police press release, the offence was committed on Saturday, July 12, 2008 “when police conducted an operation in Jessups Village and Powell was found with the drugs in his possession”.

A $1 000 fine was imposed on Craddock Road resident Vere Henry who was also convicted of one count of “possession of cannabis”. He was ordered to pay the sum within two months and failing to do so would require him to spend two months behind bars. This offence, according to police, was committed on July 12, 2008 “when during a routine stop and search operation in Charlestown, he was found carrying the illegal drugs”.

Saddlers Village resident Abraham Thomas has the next three months to come up with $1 500, which he has to pay as punishment for committing the offence of “possession of cannabis”. The charge was preferred against him when, during an operation conducted at Cades Bay on July 11, 2008, he was found carrying drugs.

Chino Evans of Sandy Point took up residence at Her Majesty’s Prison after he was convicted of a larceny offence. He was ordered by the court to serve a two-year sentence.

Over on Nevis, Cleave Davis of Government Road could face prison sentence if he fails to find the $500 fine he was ordered to pay after being convicted of a July 11, 2008 offence of “malicious damage”.  Davis was also ordered to pay $500 compensation to Stefbirth Sergeant of KGS Health and Beauty “whose store window was broken by Davis with a bottle”. The compensatory sum must be paid within one month or in default, serve one month imprisonment.
