Cable & Wireless receives Chamber Award for Contribution to Education

Plaque presentation by the Prime Minister to Terrence Crossman of C&W

Basseterre; St. Kitts - In another acknowledgement of its corporate social responsibility, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce presented a national award to Cable & Wireless for its contribution to education, at its private sector banquet held earlier this month.  In the citation that preceded the presentation, the company’s sponsorship of the Academic Excellence Award for the last 19 years was specifically highlighted.  Mention was also made of the fact, that not only does Cable & Wireless underwrite the full cost of the annual awards ceremony, but the runner-up state scholar receives the equivalent of a first semester payment in cash from Cable & Wireless. The excerpt also chronicled the company’s own scholarship programme which celebrates 20 years this year.

The award in the form of a plaque was presented to Mr. Terrence Crossman in his capacity as Ag Chief Executive, by Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr Denzil Douglas.  In post banquet comments Mr. Crossman expressed pride and honour to receive the award on behalf of the entire organisation.  “Although we expect no recognition for doing what any civic-minded and good corporate citizen should do, it sure feels good that an institution of the caliber of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce has recognized us for our social investment.  Education is one of the few areas from which one can see tangible results manifested in and across our society and as such it’s surely worth the investment,” he concluded.

According to the Executive Director of the Chamber, Ms Wendy Phipps, her organisation was asked to look at the contribution of several private sector organisations over the last two and a half decades in several fields of endeavour as part of the criteria in determining the eventual winners.

To coincide with the silver anniversary of independence being celebrated this year, her committee was then tasked with selecting those organisations whose involvement provided “national development” to St. Kitts and Nevis.

At its annual private sector banquet two years ago, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce also conferred its first-ever Corporate Award on Cable & Wireless.
