CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – FISHERMEN on Nevis are now better equipped to market and store their produce, as the doors to a newly refurbished Nevis Fishermen Marketing and Supply Cooperative Society Limited were officially opened on Tuesday, July 29.

In an outdoor ceremony yesterday, government officials, fishermen and members of the public gathered in Market Street, Charlestown to witness the official opening of the Nevis Fishermen Marketing and Supply Cooperative Society Limited.

The Fisheries Complex, as it is also called, faced many challenges in the past

    Minister of Agriculture,Hon. Robelto Hector
which led to its closure in December 2006.

However, in February 2007, efforts of reviving the Fisheries Complex began following the appointment of William Griffin as Manager.

Director of Cooperatives on Nevis Samuel Powell gave the welcome remarks at the opening ceremony and urged fishers and members of the public to support the venture.

Emmanuel Richards ,President of the Nevis Fishermen Marketing and Supply Cooperative Limited
“I appeal to the fishers and to the members of the Cooperative to support the Nevis Fishermen Marketing and Supply Cooperative Society.

Paying your registration fee is not enough! You have to be involved in economic activity with the Cooperative, for it is by means of your track record with the Cooperative that you will be able to get benefits,” Powell said.

President of the Nevis Fishermen Marketing and Supply Cooperative Limited Emmanuel Richards gave a break-down of the monies spent to refurbish the complex.

“The money spent by the Ministry of Agriculture include the purchasing of two freezers, fans, tiles for the floor, payment and painting and renovation for the water pipes and toilet, an air-condition unit and a processing room, and the building of the secretary cashier’s office and a computer system and other items,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Robelto Hector expressed his joy in the reopening of the complex.

“Let me say how happy I am to witness the progress we have made in this our effort to re-energise our fishing sector.

“As a sector directly related to the tourism product, we are committed to ensure

Director of Cooperatives on Nevis Samuel Powell
    that the correct synergy exists.

I call on you as food providers to rise to the challenge of ensuring that Nevisians are fed. I call on you to continue to assist in ensuring our food security,” Minister Hector said.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Augustine Merchant, representative of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA); Deputy Premier in the NIA Hon.
