Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, July 4th, 2012   –   In maintaining the Territory’s position as a reputable financial services centre, three BVI firms have received top ranks in the 2012 Offshore Law Firm Awards.

BVI firm Ogier was named Offshore Law Firm of the year by leading global publication, The Lawyer. BVI firms Harneys and Maples and Calder were runners up.

In extending congratulations, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE, told the Department of Information and Public Relations that he is pleased with the continued commitment of the firms, adding that the Territory is further being recognised as a reputable jurisdiction in offshore law.

“The awards reflect the quality of the legal and support services available to companies wishing to do business in the BVI,” Premier Smith said.

In an invited comment, Managing Partner of Ogier's BVI office Mr. Ray Wearmouth said, “The top three places went to firms who have significant BVI practices both locally and around the world. The BVI has an excellent body of law firms who work well together to promote our first class global offering."

The Lawyer Awards celebrate excellence in the legal profession and were announced at a ceremony attended by over 800 people at London's Grosvenor House Hotel last week. The Awards recognise companies that have outperformed their peer group. Judges look for evidence of strategic clarity, technical legal excellence and quality control, growth in market share and the context of the firm’s progress within the jurisdictions in which they operate.

In a May 7 online article (www.thelawyer.com) about the awards, The Lawyer reported, "With more entries than ever before, the standard of entries this year was exceptional, with those making the shortlist true market leaders". The publication praised Ogier for being innovative and leading the way in the offshore world.

The Government of the British Virgin Islands is committed to further expanding the offshore banking and law sectors by building on the Territory’s successes.
