Meet Patricia Walters, new Chief Executive Officer of Cable & Wireless and a second generation KittiNevisian. With a mother from Nevis, a father from St. Kitts and an upbringing in the United Kingdom, Pat Walters is well poised to pull all aspects of our history together and steer us into the future of a new telecommunications age.
But Pat Walters is also creating history in her own right. As the first female to head Cable & Wireless St. Kitts Nevis and the first black female to have been sent overseas by Cable & Wireless to head an island division, she is proof that it is possible for females to shatter the glass ceiling and fill top positions that have up until now been held by males only.
But one does not attain top positions by chance; hence Ms Walters must have excelled and impressed her former bosses to have reached thus far while still in the prime of her life. According to Ms Walters, having successfully studied business and management, she honed her skills while working for giant corporations such as Sears and P & O Shipping.
But besides all this, there is no doubt that her attitude to life and to people has determined what she has accomplished. She feels that it is very important to develop people and that the customers of Cable and Wireless represent the most important component of their business. They should therefore be made to feel special as they are special to the business.
When questioned about the challenges the telecommunications business now faces, she showed no anxiety and stated that she was very familiar with competition, having worked in the retail business and in shipping both of which were fiercely competitive.
Whether it is as a result of her caring female nature or her knowledge of business, Pat has decided that her goals are to provide excellent customer service and to ensure that staff is treated well. She sees Cable & Wireless playing its role as a good corporate citizen by becoming involved in the community and giving back to it as much as it could.

Already Cable & Wireless appears to have taken a new lease on a life with its new dynamic CEO. Its new exciting marketing strategies and its cutting edge products seem to be capturing the market. Just a month ago clients were indeed made to feel special at the 1st Annual Themed Client Appreciation function, and very recently an Award Function was held for Staff. So the signs are that this new CEO is already putting into practice the philosophy she has voiced.
At the Staff Awards ceremony, she stated: That we have taken the time to reward outstanding performance can only serve as a moral booster to all of us.
This statement not only mirrors her experience but indicates the generosity of spirit and holistic approach that she brings to Cable & Wireless at this time.
We take time out to welcome and salute Ms. Patricia Walters, who is providing a moral boost for all women of the Federation. She is a great role model for all women to observe especially during International Womens Day/week when we monitor the progress of women world wide.
We wish Ms Pat Walters every success in her new and challenging post and hope that she will be as comfortable in the land of her parents birth as we feel in welcoming her here as one of us.
