18 plead guilty at Traffic Court

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RATHER than waste the court’s time, 18 individuals - who were charged with traffic-related offences and had appeared before the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court at the beginning of this month - admitted their guilt and were fined accordingly.

     

    The offenders appeared before Her Worship Simone Bullen-Thompson on July 5.

     

    Omarwale Edmeade of Old Road – who was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol (DUI) and driving without due care and attention – was fined $800 and $600 respectively. The first sum it to be paid within two months and the latter to be paid within four months.

     

    Failure to obey the directive of the court would attract a custodial penalty.

     

    Jose Tokkes of Frigate Bay pleaded guilty to driving without a valid driver’s license and was cautioned.

     

    Gus Williams of Wellington Road was issued a $100-fine for parking his vehicle in a restricted area. The fine was to have been paid within three days or, in default, serve a three-month stint at Her Majesty’s Prison.

     

    Bird Rock resident Alex Duggins – for driving without due care and attention and driving without insurance – was fined respective amounts of $600 and $800 to be paid within a specified period or face the possibility of serving a custodial sentence.

     

    Market Street resident Cameron Percival and Mario Purtur of Bourryeaux Village both pleaded guilty to separate incidents of driving without due care and attention. While Purtur was cautioned, Percival was issued a $500 fine to be paid within two months or serve one week in prison.

     

    Winston Rogers of Halfway Tree and Yogesh Amarnani of Fortlands were also convicted of separate counts of driving without due care and attention. Rogers was fined $500 and Amarnani $600. Both sums are to be paid within one month or a one month custodial sentence would be imposed.

     

    For using a cellular phone while operating a vehicle, Carol Defraites of Bladens Housing was fined $300 to be paid within two weeks or serve one week at Her Majesty’s Prison.

     

    Tabernacle resident Dwight Smith was fined $250 for operating a vehicle while he was not wearing a seatbelt. Should he have failed to pay the sum within the stipulated one-week period, Smith would have been made to spend one week in jail.

     

    Tyrone Nisbett of Tabernacle confessed to two counts of driving off the bus route and was fined $250 on each.

     

    Trevor Mason of Saddlers and Terrence Huggins of West Farm, who pleaded guilty to two separate “driving off the bus route” offences, were fined $250 each.

     

    For driving while not covered with insurance, both Gawran Anand and Amir Kott of Frigate Bay were fined $500 each.

     

    Pleading guilty to two counts of driving without due care and attention, Alva Thompson of Cayon was fined $400 and $600.
     
    A $600-fine was slapped on Talbert Clarke for the offence of driving without due care and attention.

     

    Ray Williams of Molineaux was fined $500 to be paid within one month or serve one month behind bars for committing a “driving without due care and attention” offence.
