Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, July 18th, 2012  –  Residents of the Virgin Islands will on Saturday, July 28 be featured to a night of original prose when the 2012 Calypso Show will be held and local calypsonians will perform one song to vie for this year’s Calypso Monarch title.

This was revealed by Mr. Marvin Williams, Chair of the 2012 Calypso Sub-Committee at the Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee’s press conference this morning.

Mr. Williams said the committee met with the calypsonians and compromised on issues that will benefit both parties. He stated that no elimination round will be held for this year’s competition; instead all 18 calypsonians have agreed to take the stage and perform one song, with original lyrics and melody, to compete for the crown.

Ms. Williams also revealed that the winner of this year’s Calypso Show will perform free of cost at the Miss British Virgin Islands pageant and will perform for a negotiated fee at paid nights in the festival village.

Mr. Marvin Blyden, Chairman of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee said he is happy that the calypsonians and the committee are in agreement and he looks forward to “the best calypso show in the history of the Virgin Islands.”

Mrs. Brenda Lettsome-Tye, Acting Director of Culture encouraged the public to come out in numbers and support the local talent because the calypsonians will “bring the best of what they have because they are coming to win that crown. It promises to be a fantastic show.”
