House fire leaves five homeless

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A Fiennes Avenue fire, which occurred earlier today (July 19), has left a five-member family without clothes on their back and a roof over their heads.

The blaze – according to information reaching this publication - began sometime between 8:00 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. in a three-bedroom wooden one-storey structure located on the western side of Lower Fiennes Avenue.

The scene of the fire was visited by this publication and it was observed that a tender of the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services was parked in vicinity and the blaze had already been extinguished.

It was also observed that a young woman – whom this publication later learnt was Anthea Sage, one of the occupants of the house – was distraught by the loss of her home and had to be comforted by relatives.

The house was occupied by Sage, her significant other Damian Pemberton and three of her children, who are of juvenile age.

The house was vacant when the incident occurred and, thankfully, it resulted in no injuries.

Fire Station Officer (FSO Stn) Everette O’Garro told SKNVibes that a call was received by the Fire Department at approximately 8:51 a.m. and a unit was immediately dispatched. He said when they arrived at the scene the central section of the structure was engulfed in flames.

The swift action of the attending officers resulted in the fire being quenched in relatively quick time and a number of items within the home were saved from destruction.

FSO Stn O’Garro said he does not know the cause of the fire; however, this publication received information which suggests it may have been of an electrical nature.

Members of the Crime Scene Unit of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force were also at the scene to conduct investigations into the occurrence.
