BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (FEBRUARY 14TH 2004) – Progress is being made on the construction of the new playing field at Conaree and a regional expert said he will recommend it become a warm up facility for the upcoming World Cup 2007.

Parliamentary Representative for the area and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Cooperatives, Lands and Housing, the Hon. Cedric Liburd said the residents, who lost their traditional sports ground to the new multi-million dollar Caribbean Star Head Office by the Stanford Investment Group, can look forward not only to separate football and cricket fields, but also facilities for playing netball, basketball and a boxing gym. The facility is being donated by Mr. Allen Stanford.

The layout and leveling of the areas have been completed and workmen will soon begin putting down a top soil in preparation for grassing.

“As the Parliamentary Representative, I am looking forward by the end of April to have the cricket field and the football field fully grassed,” said Liburd, who added that the playing field will be second to none in St. Kitts and Nevis.

He said he looks forward to the residents of Conaree to make full use of the playing facility which may well be used in the upcoming World Cup 2007.

Mr. Liburd said he is looking at the possibility of providing a boxing gym and a general gym to be used in the training of sportsmen.

“Conaree has the distinction of having among its residents, a former Welterweight Boxing Champion, Reuben “Fighting Hunks” Percival and as the Parliamentary Representative, I am in the process of seeking a donation of this facility, which will be named in his honour,” said Liburd.

Managing Director of Terra Forma Developments, Mr. Valmikf Kempadoo, in St. Kitts to discuss the redevelopment of Warner Park in preparation for the World Cup 2007, was invited to accompany the Parliamentary Representative on the tour. He told the Communications Unit of the Prime Minister’s Office, his presence was to review the facility.

Mr. Kempadoo disclosed that he was also requested by the World Cup Committee, to conduct an audit review of the various cricket facilities around St. Kitts with the purpose of looking at them as warm-up facilities for the World Cup 2007.

“What I see here today is very great. It is a wonderful opportunity for the people of Conaree. You have a very nice facility that is being built here and I am very happy to see this facility coming together in this way,” said Kempadoo.

He said the Conaree facility with a small pavilion will be adequate area for warm up for 2007.

“I will be putting that in my recommendations to the Committee,” said Kempadoo, who added that he will also further discuss the pitch and the general purpose gym with the construction managers.

“This site is very beautiful, very esthetically beautiful and so we have to be very careful when recommending fencing so that we do not erect a huge stone wall type of area,” said Kempadoo.
