Close to $6 000 in fines handed down at Traffic Court

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LAST week’s sitting of Traffic Court at the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court resulted in four individuals being convicted of various offences for which they were charged.

     

    The session was presided over by Her Worship Janene Harris and was held on Thursday (July 19) at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Complex.

     

    Jose Pereira – who was charged with giving false name to a police officer, fraudulent use of a motor vehicle licence, driving without a valid and unexpired driver’s licence and driving without insurance – was convicted and fined $1 000, $200, $400 and $1 000 for the respective offences.

     

    The sums are to be paid within a specific period or a one-week custodial sentence would be imposed.

     

    St. Christopher Club, Frigate Bay-resident Tudi Dehaan – who was convicted of driving without a valid and unexpired driver’s licence and driving when not covered by insurance – was issued fines of $400 and $1 200 respectively. An alternative punishment - custodial sentencing - would be imposed if the sum is not paid within the specified time.

     

    Being convicted of an August 29, 2011 offence, “driving without due care and attention”, Dion French of Saddlers Village was fined $500 to be paid within two months or serve two weeks at Her Majesty’s Prison.

     

    Sebastian Street, Newtown resident Ramon Palmer was convicted of a June 15, 2012 offence of “driving without insurance”. He was ordered by Her Worship Harris to pay a $1 000 fine within two weeks or in default, serve one week behind bars.
