BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RESIDENTS of St. Christopher and Nevis are asked to note that a flashflood warning is in effect for the territory until early this afternoon.
The advisory – according to the St. Kitts Meteorological Office – was issued by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service this morning.
The warning also extends to Montserrat, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands and Antigua and Barbuda and it valid until 2:00 p.m. today.
“Flash flood warning mans that moderate to major flooding is imminent or occurring in low lying and flood prone areas,” the St. Kitts Met Office advised.
St. Kitts-Nevis’ National Disaster Coordinator Carl Herbert issued a word of caution yesterday which is applicable in the current circumstances.
“As we experience the passage of a tropical wave, we want to remind residents to avoid parking in ghuats and watercourses in order to avoid possible loss of life or injury to life and also loss of property such as vehicles. We also want to remind residents that we are still in hurricane season and we are asking persons to continue to do all that is necessary within their control to be prepared.”
Since yesterday, a number of Leeward and other islands received heavy rainfall and gusty winds which were and continue to be the result of a tropical wave that was moving across the area.
The Met Office had indicated that conditions are expected to improve through this afternoon into tomorrow as the system heads towards the British Virgin Islands.
Residents are asked to closely monitor local radio stations and the media for further updates on the weather and the status of the flashflood warning.
