Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 3rd, 2012  Twelve apprentices from the Ministry’s of Communications and Works’ Apprenticeship programme completed a two-week training and will serve as Service Ambassadors at the Territory’s Sea Ports beginning tomorrow August 4.

The Service Ambassadors initiative came as a result of the Ministry’s attempt to increase customer relations at the various ports of entry.

“We want our residents and visitors to have a better welcoming experience and we want to provide more direction and services to visitors coming into our ports,” Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

The newly trained Service Ambassadors, among other duties, will assist passengers with completing Immigration and Customs forms prior to arriving at check-in stations, aid port users with securing taxi services, answer inquiries for general information and directions, as well as assisting elderly and persons with health impediments through security and screening.

Service Ambassadors will be stationed at West End, Road Town, and Virgin Gorda (St. Thomas Bay Jetty)

“I am very pleased to see the level of enthusiasm and excitement from our new Service Ambassadors, I think they will do very well,” Minister Vanterpool concluded.

The apprenticeship programme is the brain child of the Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool as part of his commitment to support the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Youth Unemployment initiative and his desire to provide employment opportunities for the Territory’s young people.

Government seeks to enhance the quality of life for residents of the Virgin Islands by making sure that the youth population is equipped with the necessary skills and experience to enter the workforce. Such opportunities would also allow our young people to make valuable contributions to the growth and development of Territory.
