Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 3rd,2012  –  The Fire and Rescue Services Department is asking visitors, revellers, spectators, performers, booth owners and patrons to have a safe and enjoyable festival season as 58 years of emancipation is celebrated.

“This is the time of the year when we enjoy and appreciate the celebrations of our freedom to the fullest, but we remind all to exercise caution to ensure the protection of self and family during this festival season,” Sub Officer Geraldo Barry of the Service Delivery Unit told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

Sub Officer Barry shared some event planning and crowd safety tips. “When leaving home, remember to tell children what to do in case you get separated. Make sure they either know or have the following information - their name, the name of their parents, their address, and the emergency 911 number. Before leaving the house ensure that gas cylinders and electrical items such as fans, AC Units and microwave ovens are turned off.”

According to Mr. Barry, upon arriving at a function you should be aware of your surroundings, know where the exits are and know where the fire extinguishers are located. Residents are also warned to drink responsibly, designate driver and to obey the traffic laws of the Virgin Islands.

Sub Officer Barry closed by saying, “We want everyone to enjoy themselves. Have a wonderful time, celebrate freedom, but keep your heads on. We want to see you all the following week, healthy and happy.”

The Fire and Rescue Service is committed to protecting life and property from the effects of fire and all other man-made and natural accidents and disasters.
