Sweet Sister Sensia: ‘Can’t walk in her shoes’

Sweet Sister Sensia

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – YOU hear her on the radio, see her grinding in the club as a DJ, co-hosting ZIZ’s the People’s Show and emceeing at various functions. Michelle Stokes a.k.a. Sweet Sister Sensia fills many roles and as her latest release states not many can walk in her shoes.

Hands down she is the hardest working lady in the music industry in St. Kitts-Nevis, and she still manages to remain relevant for over 13 years whether it is with her stimulating radio shows on Freedom FM or dabbling on the microphone.

“I use to freestyle in high school. It used to be myself, Ashkenaz who in those times use to be known as Jabalo, Pepperranks and Morga Dan,” she said.

“When it comes to High School shows we use to take charge of those stages with freestyle and it use to be so much fun but ever since I started in the DJ business, I just cooled off of it.”

Stokes said she was constantly encouraged by fellow artiste Silk of Dark Child Records, to get into recording music.

Finally she agreed to do so after he suggested that she do a counteraction to Pinnochio’s song ‘Stop Call Me Phone’, she released ‘Me Nar Tek Dat’.

Both artistes decided to make music videos for their songs, which were well received among their supporters.
She then decided to work on a song that she felt not only speaks to her but anyone else can relate to.

“Can’t Walk in my Shoes-I think speaks about me and a lot of people who go through the same things as I do where there are people who always find negative things to say about you to bring you down.

“But no matter what they say or do they just can’t walk the road I have walked to get where I am today,” she said.
Who knows where this new move will take her; Stokes said she is up for anything, however, she continually enjoys spinning music in the club and pleasing her fans.

“I am loving every minute of it - that's my life, music! I was born into music and that's what relaxes me a lot. It’s something I don’t think I could even put down.

“Even if I’m pregnant, I’ll still be hitting the clubs and playing for the fans no matter what, unless of course the doctor says I need bed rest but that's just how much I love entertaining the fans with my fellow DJs,” she said.

Stokes said that DJ Yardy of Energetic International has been a constant support and encouragement for her.

“I got to also big up my boy DJ Yardy of Energetic International, who gives me more push than anything to keep doing what I'm doing so as not to stop. I would also like to say that I want all my other DJ friends to let’s come together. It makes no sense we are fighting against each other.

“We won’t reach too far with that attitude; fans are watching and other young Djs are watching and would want to follow our pattern. I’m a woman in this business and as a woman you have to be strong,” she said.

And while the ‘haters’ stay talking and the ‘fight down’ continues, Stokes continues to shine.

Always on the go, she said she has a gig on August 25 in St. Martin, and will be heading to Miami, New York and St. Croix alongside the Nu Vybes Band soon.

“I have a lot of plans in the making; Guyana and a few other places just repping and doing what I do best but I work hard to make my fans, family, friends, dad and especially to make my mama and God proud.

And if you know anything about Stokes then you will know she has a deep immeasurable love for her mother.

“She worked hard to get me where I am and I am working hard to make all her dreams come true. It’s my way of saying thanks so my future plan is to put a smile on my mama’s face every day that I live.”
