One killed in New Pond Site; brother hospitalised

DECEASED: Steven Connor
By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE man was killed last night (Aug. 15) in New Pond Site and his brother is being treated for a gunshot wound to one of his legs.

On arrival at the scene, SKNVibes learnt that Steven Connor of Newtown and formally of McKnight was shot to death and his younger brother, Jerome, was injured in the leg while they were walking along Lewis Lane in New Pond Site.

According to residents of the area, shortly after 10:00 p.m. they heard a number of shots being fired and, on investigation, they saw one man lying motionless on the roadway and another running east along Lewis Lane.

“The injured man ran into one of my neighbour’s yard calling out for help and telling them to call 911 because he was shot and his brother killed. He was bleeding profusely from the leg and my neighbour tied it with a piece of cloth to stop the bleeding,” one resident said.

The resident also said that the injured man told them that he and his elder brother had earlier left Monkey Hill where he lives and that he was accompanying him to Newtown when a number of masked men emerged from a vehicle and started shooting at them.

“He said that after seeing his brother fell to the ground, he felt a sharp pain in his leg and he started to run towards the Island’s Main Road but turned into my neighbour’s yard to seek shelter from the gunmen.  According to what he said, I strongly believe that the gunmen were tailing them for some time and they knew their routine, because the injured man said that they always use that route when they leave Monkey Hill to go to Newtown,” the resident added.

The District Medical Officer was summoned to the scene, and after pronouncing Connor dead undertakers from a funeral home removed the body around 1:00 a.m.

Connor’s death has taken to 14 the number of murders committed in the twin-island Federation for the year; 12 on St. Kitts and two on Nevis.
