“No more excuses.. Enough is Enough!” Hon. Shawn Richards reacts to federation’s 14th murder

Hon. Shawn Richards
Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, August 17th 2012 - The Hon. Shawn Richards Deputy Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement has expressed sorrow and anger after the federation recorded it’s 14th and possibly 15th murder for 2012.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families who are suffering today. Enough is enough!! No more excuses for why this government cannot secure its citizens. No more excuses for why we cannot after so many years get a handle on the crime crisis in this country. This government has failed Stephen Connor and the family that grieves for them today. Enough really is enough.

The federation can no longer afford a government that stands idly by while our young people are slaughtered and lay in rivers of blood on our streets. This country deserves a government that makes the security and well-being of all its citizens the #1 priority,” lamented Richards.

“ This is a sad moment, a sad, sad moment indeed. Seems we've been having too many sad moments lately in this country.  Once more, I think it's high time that we take a closer look at the crime crisis in this country. The current government daily shows its failure to handle St. Kitts-Nevis crime epidemic. Almost every week we hear stories of robberies, shootings or murders.

The Commissioner of police appears to be trying his best. However, the people of this country are crying out for united action. Hence, the government needs to appoint a commission comprising of representatives of civil society and all political parties to investigate this madness and to do so as a matter of urgency. The Commission needs to do an analysis of whether we're using the best techniques, practices and persons to fight crime in this country.

The Commission will also look into the crime fighting efforts of the police force. The Commission also needs to have latitude to seek expert advice be it locally, regionally or internationally,” the two term Parliamentarian suggested.

Young Steven Connor and his brother were approached and shot at by unknown masked assailants while heading home to St.Peters walking through New Pond Site where the killing occurred. One brother ran for cover in a nearby house and the other died on the spot.
