Young Cricketers (13 & under) welcomed to Annual Tournament!

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE 16th Annual 13 & Under Regional Cricket Tournament opened today (August 17) and the youths are gearing up to put on a show for the cricket lovers.

     

    Six teams from various Caribbean islands are currently in St. Kitts where they will par-take in five rounds of cricket over a two week period, playing a total of 15 matches.

     

    The teams are Anguilla, Dominica, Montserrat, Nevis, St. Kitts and Barbados who is the reigning champion.

     

    At an opening ceremony held at the Wesley Methodist Church Hall today, the Umpires and players took their respective oaths to judge and play fairly.

     

    A number of persons gave the players words of guidance and encouragement including Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Sam Condor who paid tribute to the "founding fathers" of the Tournament.

     

    He reminded the players that preparation and practice are important while discipline is essential.

     

    The players were encouraged to play with passion. "Go on the field as opponents and come off as friends," they were encouraged by Director of Sports, Dave Connor.

     

    Chairman of the 13 & Under Committee Vernon Springer said that, to date, the tournament has produced two test players - Kieran Powell of Nevis and Kraigg Brathwaite of Barbados, noting that the programme, since its inception 16 years ago has gone from strength to strength.

     

    He said that every year at least 120 young cricketers come out to participate in the Tournament hailing from countries such as Anguilla, Dominica, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Trinidad and Tobago, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, and Montserrat.

     

    The matches will be played between Sunday, August 19 and Saturday, August 25 with the TDC sponsored ten/ten competition being played on August 27 and 28.
