Basseterre, St. Kitts (March 21, 2005): A workshop organized by the Early Childhood Development Unit came to a successful close on the weekend.
The workshop held at the Indistrial Site Day Care Centre attracted 37 participants from 24 preschools and kindergarten teachers from six primary schools.

The main objective of the workshop was to help educators develop teaching skills and appropriate activities to enable them to implement the preschool programme.

In order to achieve this and other objectives the participants were exposed to several topics which included looking at history, theories and philosophers which have influenced current practices in childhood development, preschool learning environment and daily routine.

The presence of the kindergarten teachers at the workshop forms part of the Early Childhood Units plan of having a closer working relationship with them in order to facilitate a smoother transition from preschool to primary school.

A special half day session focused on First Aid. This session exposed teachers to first aid measures to be taken in emergencies at the centers. Another special session was undertaken by the kindergarten teachers on strategies used in teaching the alphabet and handwriting at that level.

Following the workshops teachers will be invited to five one-day workshops were selected topics will be addressed more extensively.
